7 January : INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS wins 4 awards at the 48th edition of the National Society of Film Critics Awards (NSFC): Best Picture, Best Directors (Joel and Ethan Coen), Best Actor (Oscar Isaac) and Best Cinematography (Bruno Delbonnel). The National Society of Film Critics brings together the 56 most important critics in the United States.

16 January : Academy Awards nominations are announced: ERNEST & CELESTINE is nominated in the “Best Animated Film” category.

20 January – THE TWO FACES OF JANUARY and THE HUNDRED-YEAR-OLD MAN WHO CLIMBED OUT THE WINDOW AND DISAPPEARED are selected for the Berlinale Special section of the Berlin Film Festival (6 - 16 February 2014).

3 February: the animated film ERNEST & CELESTINE receives 3 Magritte du cinéma awards in Belgium: Best Film, Best Directors and Best Sound.

6 February 2014 : MACBETH directed by Justin Kurzel and starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard starts filming in Scotland and England. MACBETH is produced by See-Saw Films (THE KING’S SPEECH, SHAME).

7 February 2014 - Shooting begins for RIEN NE SERT DE COURIR by Maïwenn, starring Emmanuelle Bercot and Vincent Cassel, produced by Les Productions du Trésor.

14 February: over a million cinemagoers have seen the 3D animated film THE HOUSE OF MAGIC in France.

18 February: STUDIOCANAL releases JACQUES TATI, L’INTEGRALE, bringing together for the first time Jacques Tati’s entire output on DVD, Blu-Ray and VOD: 6 feature films and 7 short films – all restored with the utmost respect for the original works.

3 March: Taking $56 million in the first weekend of its release, NON-STOP goes straight to the top of the worldwide box office. Released by Universal in the United States on Friday 28 February, NON-STOP went straight to the top of the American box office, taking $29 million. The movie would take over $215m million in total.

25 March : Shooting starts on John Le Carré’s OUR KIND OF TRAITOR with Ewan Mcgregor, Stellan Skarsgard, Damian Lewis, Jeremy Northam et Naomie Harris. Susanna White directs this adaptation of John le Carré’s novel from a script by Hossein Amini.

8 April: Tandem Communications signs a priority distribution agreement with Frank Spotnitz’s Big Light Productions Company (THE X-FILES)

1 May 2014 – STUDIOCANAL UK receives the “Marketing Initiative of the Year – Catalogue Product” award from the British Video Association for its re-release campaign for THE WICKER MAN.

14 May : STUDIOCANAL, Danish writers Søren Sveistrup (THE KILLING) and Adam Price (BORGEN) and film producer Meta Louise Foldager (MELANCHOLIA, A ROYAL AFFAIR) join forces to create a new TV series production company: SAM Productions ApS. STUDIOCANAL achieves its best ever Cannes market with a dense and varied line-up: MACBETH; Stephen Frears’ Lance Armstrong project; LEGEND, focusing on the Kray brothers...

Two new TV series produced by RED Production Company top the audience ratings in the UK: Sally Wainwright’s HAPPY VALLEY achieves 7 million viewers on BBC One; PREY, broadcast on ITV, achieves an average of 5.5 million viewers per week, for an average market share of 23.5%.

In June, shooting begins in London on LEGEND, in which Tom Hardy plays the English gangster twins Ronnie and Reggie Kray. LEGEND is produced by Working Title Films (TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY, RUSH, BRIDGET JONES ...).

10 June : FAMILLE A LOUER, the new comedy by Jean-Pierre Améris starring Benoît Poelvoorde, Virginia Efira and François Morel, goes into production, produced by Pan-European.

STUDIOCANAL Germany announces that it is to co-produce and distribute the police comedy DESASTER by Justus von Dohnányi.

15 July : SHAUN THE SHEEP is voted the UK’s best-loved BBC children’s TV character in a poll conducted by the respected - and widely read - cultural magazine, RADIO TIMES.

Production starts on Luca Guadagnino’s (AMORE / I AM LOVE) new feature film, a glamorous thriller starring Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoenaerts and Dakota Johnson. It is shot on location in the island of Pantelleria, Italy. COTA Films produces.

Michel Gondry starts filming his 11th feature film, MICROBE ET GASOIL. Young actors discovered by Michel Gondry take the lead roles in this road trip, the story of a friendship between two teenagers, which also stars Audrey Tautou. The film is produced by PARTIZAN.

24 September : Seventy-five years after its first release, Marcel Carné’s LE JOUR SE LEVE is re-released in France in a 4K restoration by STUDIOCANAL and the Éclair Group. This new version includes scenes that were censored by the Vichy regime: a scene showing the actress Arletty naked in the shower, and one suggesting that the police are fascist thugs. The film will then be released internationally, including in the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany.


On 20 January, NBC announces its acquisition of CROSSING LINES, a police series produced by Tandem Communications and Bernero Productions, starring William Fichtner, Donald Sutherland and Marc Lavoine.

On 22 February, ERNEST AND CELESTINE receives the César for the best animated film. The film, which narrates the unexpected friendship between a bear and a little mouse, was produced by Benjamin Renner, Stéphane Aubier and Vincent Patar, from a film script written by Daniel Pennac.

On 24 February, Jennifer Lawrence wins the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in David O. Russell's SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, distributed in France by STUDIOCANAL. Malik Bendjelloul's SUGARMAN, distributed in the United Kingdom by STUDIOCANAL, is awarded the Oscar for Best Documentary.


Success for BILLY AND BUDDY (BOULE ET BILL), with a record-breaking 204,534 tickets sold on 27 February, the day of its release. The film would eventually notch up two million spectators altogether.

Hoyts Distribution, STUDIOCANAL subsidiary in Australia and New Zealand, is renamed STUDIOCANAL as of 2 April.

On 25 April, STUDIOCANAL and Aardman Animations announce production of the full-length feature film SHAUN THE MOUTON. STUDIOCANAL is entirely financing the film and will distribute it in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia and New Zealand, as well as managing international sales.


On 16 May, Sofia Coppola's THE BLING RING, distributed in the United Kingdom by STUDIOCANAL, opens the "Un certain regard" section at the Cannes Film Festival. 

On 17 May, 2013, Rola Bauer, Chairwoman of Tandem Communications, is named Producer of the Year at the Bavarian Television Awards for the cult series THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH, based on the international best seller by Ken Follett.


On 25 May, René Clément's PLEIN SOLEIL is presented in 4K restored version as part of Cannes Classics, in the presence of Alain Delon and it is released in digital 4K restored version in movie houses and on DVD Blu-Ray in France in July, followed by Germany in August and the United Kingdom in September.

On 26 May, the Coen brothers' INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS wins the Jury Grand Prize at the 66th Cannes Film Festival. The film was entirely financed by STUDIOCANAL, which also manages world rights (outside the USA).


In September 2013, Re-release on DVD and Blu-ray of THE HUMAN BEAST, based on the novel by Emile Zola, in which Jean Renoir teams up once again with Jean Gabin, who had previously starred in Renoir’s GRAND  ILLUSION (they were to film together four times during their careers). Seventy-five years after its first release, this masterpiece has been restored in 2K digital by STUDIOCANAL thanks to the technical expertise of L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory (Bologna), and was presented at the Venice Film Festival.

On 5 September, STUDIOCANAL and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) sign an exclusive distribution agreement. Under this five-year agreement, from January 2014 the CBC will distribute over 1,400 French-language films (around 1,200 French films and 200 Italian films) from the STUDIOCANAL catalogue, on DVD, Blu-ray, VOD and EST.

24 September: Successful summer re-release for THE KING AND THE MOCKINGBIRD.  The film was seen by over 50,000 cinemagoers – a record for a heritage film.


On 16 October, STUDIOCANAL and WORKING TITLE FILMS join forces for the fourth time to produce Stephen Frears’ new film, which deals with the Lance Armstrong system. The film stars Ben Foster, Chris O’Dowd, David Walsh, Guillaume Canet and Jesse Plemons.

On 8 November, RUSH by Ron Howard, starring Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl, takes over £10 million in box office in the United Kingdom, where it is distributed by STUDIOCANAL.

On 21 November, THE HUNGER GAMES - CATCHING FIRE is released in Germany, distributed by STUDIOCANAL. With 1,175,000 tickets sold taking almost €10 million in just four days, it goes straight to number one at the box office. This is the best opening ever for STUDIOCANAL in Germany.

On 5 December, STUDIOCANAL announces it has acquired a majority stake in RED Production Company, an independent British producer specialising in television series. This represents a new step in the development of its TV production activities. Since its launch in 1998, RED has produced programmes that have been a hit with critics and audiences alike: the ground-breaking  QUEER AS FOLK for Channel 4 (distributed by CANAL +), SCOTT & BAILEY, which has been very popular in the UK, and LAST TANGO IN HALIFAX, which won two BAFTAs in 2013.

On 9 December 2013, STUDIOCANAL and Tandem Communications win the 2013 Franco-German Cultural Industries and Businesses Prize. 


In January, STUDIOCANAL takes a majority stake in Tandem Communications, one of the leading European companies for international primetime Event TV productions.


In France HOLLYWOO, starring Florence Foresti and Jamel Debbouze draws over 2 million viewers to cinemas.

TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY gets 3 Academy Awards nominations : Gary Oldman gets nominated for Best Actor in a leading role, and the film also runs for Best Screenplay (Adaptation) and Best original Score.


In February, Jean Renoir’s masterpiece GRAND ILLUSION is rereleased in cinemas and released in Blu-ray, in a remastered version.


On February 12th, STUDIOCANAL receives 5 BAFTAs : TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY gets Outstanding British Film and Best Adapted Screenplay. SENNA wins Best Documentary and Best Editing. Finally TYRANNOSAUR, distributed by STUDIOCANAL in the United-Kingdom, receives the BAFTA for Outstanding Debut.

In May, at the 65th Cannes Film Festival, Wes Anderson’s MOONRISE KINGDOM, distributed in France by STUDIOCANAL, and YOU AIN’T SEEN NOTHING YET directed by Alain Resnais, coproduced by STUDIOCANAL, are in Official Selection, in Competition. ERNEST AND CELESTINE, a STUDIOCANAL coproduction, is in selection at the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs.


Harry Potter producer David Heyman and STUDIOCANAL announce they will bring to the big screen the adventures of iconic and beloved Paddington bear.


On May 18th, Olivier Courson, Chairman and CEO of STUDIOCANAL, receives the Variety « Achievement in International Film » 2012 Award. It is the first time the famous American magazine awards a French company.


In July, STUDIOCANAL and Les Films de Mon Oncle sign a deal regarding Jacques Tati’s films : from now on, STUDIOCANAL will handle world distribution rights to all Jacques Tati features, except theatrical in France and festivals, which will be handled directly by Les Films de Mon Oncle.

On July 17th, STUDIOCANAL signs an agreement with Hoyts Group to acquire 100 % of Hoyts distribution, their film distribution division operating in Australia and New Zealand.

In August 2012, RIALTO PICTURES, pioneer in distribution of classic films in the USA, now distributes over 2,000 classics from the STUDIOCANAL catalogue in American movie houses.

LIONSGATE and STUDIOCANAL broaden their collaboration on 17 September by signing a distribution agreement in Germany and Austria. It includes, notably, distribution of the HUNGER GAMES saga. The two studios also renew their distribution agreement for the STUDIOCANAL catalogue in the United States.


THE TWILIGHT SAGA : BREAKING DAWN PART 2, the last chapter in the saga, is released on 15 November in Australia and New Zealand and immediately wins top box-office status in both countries.


In February, STUDIOCANAL and Lionsgate sign an international distribution agreement with Miramax (with regard to its “Home Entertainment” catalogue that contains 550 famous titles: PULP FICTION, THE ENGLISH PATIENT, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, CHICAGO, WILL HUNTING, LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL, KILL BILL VOLUMES I and II”, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN).

February 18: UNKNOWN with Liam Neeson, Diane Kruger and January Jones is released in the United States and jumps immediately to the top at the box office. STUDIOCANAL has taken part in the development of this European co-production edited between France, United Kingdom, and Germany in collaboration with Dark Castle. STUDIOCANAL distributes the film throughout its three territories in early March.

TALES OF NIGHT (3D) directed by Michel Ocelot is the first animated film ever to compete at the Berlin International Film Festival.

SOURCE CODE hits the number one spot in the United Kingdom the week of its release.

TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY, based on John Le Carré’s novel, directed by Thomas Alfredson is released in September in the UK. It remains number one of the box-office 3 weeks in a row and grosses £14 million. The film stars Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy and Mark Strong. Produced by WORKING TITLE, it is entirely financed by STUDIOCANAL, which is in charge of its distribution in France, United Kingdom and Germany as well as its international sales.

STUDIOCANAL is the first European studio to ever close a slate transaction deal. This agreement is signed on September 29th with ANTON CAPITAL ENTERTAINMENT (ACE), a European-based media fund, to co-finance around 100 international films distributed by the studio over the next three years.


STUDIOCANAL and RTL TELEVISION sign a TV output deal in Germany that goes into effect in January 2011. It concerns all the international productions of STUDIOCANAL (SAMMY’S ADVENTURES: THE SECRET PASSAGE in 3D, THE NEXT THREE DAYS with Russel Crowe and the remakes to come of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK and CLIFFHANGER).

In February, STUDIOCANAL signs an exclusive development and production agreement with the Belgian company nWave, a European pioneer with regard to 3D. The company is notably at the origin of SAMMY’S ADVENTURES: THE SECRET PASSAGE that is released in France a few months later, then in Germany, and in the United Kingdom the year after.

STUDIOCANAL co-produces THE TOURIST, directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck and starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. This box-office film earns more than 200 million Euros worldwide.
December 11: SAMMY’S ADVENTURES: THE SECRET PASSAGE is the first STUDIOCANAL film available in 3D and distributed simultaneously in DVD, Blu-ray and VOD.


The audience for the films distributed by STUDICANAL in France exceeds 10 million. Among these films are: COCO by Gad Elmaleh (3 million viewers), CHANGE OF PLANS by Danièle Thompson (1.6 million viewers), RTT with Kad Merad (1 million viewers), THE BOAT THAT ROCKED by Richard Curtis...With WILD GRASS, Alain Renais wins the JURY SPECIAL PRIZE OF THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL.
Launch of STUDIOCANAL Collection. It aims at immortalizing in Blu-ray the best of the world’s cinematographic heritage after restoring the images and sound in high definition. To name but a few, the films THE GRADUATE, MULHOLLAND DRIVE, CONTEMPT, BREATHLESS, THE THIRD MAN and LE CERCLE ROUGE are part of this collection.


Acquisition of Kinowelt, the first German independent cinematographic group specialising in films’ acquisition and distribution: STUDIOCANAL becomes the European leader in film distribution.
1st January 2008: STUDIOCANAL reinforces its operating tools in France and launches an Economic Interest Grouping with Universal for film distribution.
STUDIOCANAL co-produces DISCO by Fabien Onteniente, PARIS by Cedric Klapisch. Warm welcome from the public for the films LE PREMIER JOUR DU RESTE DE TA VIE directed by Rémi Bezançon and DEUX JOURS A TUER by Jean Becker. Both films get over million entries.


Aiming at increasing STUDIOCANAL’s development in France and abroad, the management team is reinforced by the arrival of Olivier Courson as CEO. Renewal of the production agreements with WORKING TITLE, as well as distribution agreements with Universal and Lionsgate for the catalogues’ distribution outside France and in the UK. STUDIOCANAL opens the 60th Cannes Film Festival and presents MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS, the first film in English by the Hong Kong director Kar Wai. JE VAIS BIEN NE T’EN FAIS PAS by Philippe Lioret wins 2 Césars.


The takeover of OPTIMUM RELEASING, the British cinematographic distribution company, is the first step in STUDIOCANAL’s external growth strategy. This acquisition allows the optimisation of the STUDIOCANAL catalogues’ exploitation, notably in video, and it also enhances the partnership with the Anglo-Saxon producers. Thanks to the success of DAYS OF GLORY directed by Rachid Bouchareb (Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival), PRETE-MOI TA MAIN by Eric Lartigau, AVENUE MONTAIGNE directed by Danièle Thompson and JEAN-PHILIPPE by Laurent Tuel, STUDIOCANAL draws over 20 million people to French box offices.


MILLION DOLLAR BABY directed by Clint Eastwood wins 4 Oscars and draws over 3 million viewers to French cinemas. At the end of the year, STUDIOCANAL strikes the first deals of Video On Demand (VOD) in France.


Thank to the success of the films PODIUM, CRIMSON RIVERS: ANGEL OF THE APOCALYPSE and MARRIAGES, STUDIOCANAL draws 7.6 million viewers in France to the three films. FARENHEIT 9/11, the polemical documentary film by Michael Moore, is crowned by the jury of the Cannes Film Festival and wins the Palme d’Or. During the 61th Venice Film Festival, VERA DRAKE, the film by Mike Leigh wins two awards: the Golden Lion and The Volpi Cup awarded to the best actress. The film also wins 3 BAFTAs.


Designation of a new management team, directed by Frédéric Sichler. STUDIOCANAL decides to outsource its production in order to focus on distribution in France and abroad.


THE PIANIST by Roman Polanski wins many prestigious awards, including three Oscars and the Palme d’Or in Cannes.


THE SON’S ROOM by Nanni Moretti wins the Palme d’Or Award in Cannes, while MULHOLLAND DRIVE by David Lynch (one of the most popular film directors amongst film buffs) wins the award for Best Director and enjoys a huge success in cinemas. The film INTIMACY by Patrice Chéreau wins the Golden Bear in Berlin as well as the award for Best European Film.


LE STUDIO CANAL+ and CANAL+ Image merge and become STUDIOCANAL. BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLVES directed by Christophe Gans draws more than 5 million people to cinemas in France.


LE STUDIO CANAL+ enters into a partnership with UNIVERSAL PICTURES in order to co-finance and distribute the WORKING TITLE films such as BILLY ELLIOT by Stephen Daldry, released that year. This marks the start of a long and successful partnership.


CANAL + acquires UGC DA, the biggest film catalogue in France, and the second biggest in Europe. It includes the Lumière catalogue in France and EMI-WEINTRAUB catalogue in the United Kingdom. In the same period, LE STUDIO CANAL+ buys the CAROLCO catalogue (TERMINATOR 2, RAMBO, etc.)


In order to enlarge its catalogue, CANAL+ DA buys DEG’s catalogue. The latter contains famous titles such as THE GRADUATE.


CANAL+ founds CANAL+ DA in order to create a large and diversified catalogue. BASIC INSTINCTS produced by CAROLCO is a great success at the Cannes Film Festival and launches the career of its principal actress, Sharon Stone.


CANAL+ Production becomes LE STUDIO CANAL+ and enters into a partnership in 1990 with CAROLCO in the United States.
