Often listed as one of the most important film of the twentieth century, Jean Renoir’s LA GRANDE ILLUSION is the symbol of a universal and pacifist cinema. The story of its restoration itself is an historic and European scenario. In 1940, the Nazis confiscated the negative and kept it in Berlin. It was then taken to Moscow by the Russian army at the end of the War. The negative came back to France in the mid 1970’s within the scope of exchanges between the Toulouse film institute and the Gosfilmofond (national Russian archives).

After a first restoration in 1997, STUDIOCANAL and the Toulouse film institute decided in 2011 to restore the film again with the technologies of the twenty-first century. Immagine Ritrovata, the Italian laboratory, digitized and restored the nitrate negative, thus giving to the images their entire dimension, absolutely sublime. The sound, revised with extreme care, is stunning. This masterpiece, to (re)discover in Blu-ray thanks to STUDIOCANAL Collection, will be available in France on February 21st, in Germany on April 5th, in the UK on April 23rd and in the USA in July, 2012.
